Phillip A. Henderson, 86, of Hutchinson, died Aug. 12, 2008, at the Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1922, at Hutchinson, the son of Arthur O. and Thelma Q. Shuman Henderson. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, he was a 1940 graduate of Hutchinson High School and attended Salt City Business College. He retired in 1982 after 37 years as a supervisor at Packaging Corp. of America.
He was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, served on several committees at his church, served on the Election Board, was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels Program, and was a member of AARP.
He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 during WWII. He served in Africa, Italy, Southern France, Brazil and Sicily.
On Jan. 25, 1943, he married Edith E. Lock in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: Gary and his wife, Marcia, Randy and his wife Linda, all of Hutchinson; half brother, Freddie Bailey, Hutchinson; stepbrother, Claude Bailey, Hutchinson; half sisters, Judy Eckert, Hutchinson, Barbara Nichols, Orono, Maine, stepsister, Virginia Bale, Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Henderson, brother, Marty Henderson, half brother, Ralph "Buddy" Henderson, stepbrothers, Clinton and Lawrence Bailey.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Ron Kite officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, with family to receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. The Ft. Riley Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Faith United Methodist Church, in care of the mortuary.
