Obituary

Phyllis M. Smythe, 91, died May 24, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Village, Hutchinson.

She was born May 20, 1916, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Charles W. and Ollie Conley Pool. She graduated in 1933 from Hutchinson High School, in 1935 from Hutchinson Community College, and attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, she taught school for five years, worked for KP&L, Drillers Gas Co. and Ragland Auto Parts, and worked in the retail liquor business from 1972 to 1989.

She belonged to Holy Cross Catholic Church, Altrusa Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, serving as the past local president, and also on the state board, the church Altar Society and the Red Hat Society.

On Feb. 14, 1957, she married James J. Smythe. He died Jan. 1, 1972.

Survivors include: many special friends.

Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum.

Memorials may be sent to the Holy Cross Catholic Church or the Good Samaritan Village, both in care of the funeral home.
