Raymond G. "Ray" Kern, 86, died May 28, 2009, at his home.
He was born July 21, 1922, in Great Bend, to Lambert J. and Elizabeth Hall Kern.
He graduated in 1941, from St. Teresa High School. He worked for Producers Dairy as a route salesman, and retired after 30 years with AMPI. He was a self-employed landlord for 20 years. He belonged to Holy Cross Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 612, and the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68. He was an avid gardener and woodworker. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946.
On June 12, 1943, he married Norma J. Ford at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Jerry and wife Nance, Trenton, Ohio, and Ron, Hutchinson; five daughters, Barbara Pearson and husband James, Stockton, Mo., Linda Swank, Austin, Texas, Pat Banker and husband Sam, Ozawkie, Mary Beth Hartwell, Austin, Texas, and Connie Kimpler and husband Robert, Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gene, Harold, and an infant brother; and sisters, Margaret Evans and Irene Schawe.
Parish Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson.
