Obituary

Richard L. Evans Jr., 85, died Sept. 27, 2006, at Hester Care Center, Wesley Towers.

He was born July 23, 1921, in rural Hutchinson, the son of Richard L. Evans Sr. and Flora Dixon Evans. He graduated from Partridge High School in 1938, and Kansas State University in 1942 with a degree in agriculture. A lifetime Hutchinson area resident, he was a retired farmer, dairyman and livestock producer.

He belonged to Grace Episcopal Church and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, was past president of Kansas Holstein Association, Partridge Grade School Board, Whiteside Co-Op, and the Reno County Extension Council. He also served on the board of directors of Hutchinson Hospital and Central State Bank. In 1978, he and his wife, Alice, were chosen Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker.

On May 21, 1942, he married Alice Crosby Gunn in Kansas City, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, John Richard Evans and his wife, Gloria, Hutchinson; a daughter, Martha Tokarchik and husband, Ron, Centennial, Colo.; grandchildren, Mark Evans, Melbourne, Australia, Laurie Evans, Overland Park, Kevin Baumgarten, Denver, and Jeff Baumgarten and wife, Courtney, Naperville, Ill.; and a sister, Wilma Birkeland, Urbana, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Nelle Dixon Evans; a daughter, Nancy Evans Baumgarten; and a sister, Grace Stewart.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday a Grace Episcopal Church. Private family graveside service will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, with the Rev. Michael P. Milliken presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, all at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the memorial service.
