Obituary

Richard L. Fritschen, 71, died Sept. 25, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born Feb. 22, 1936, in Hays, the son of Leonard T. and Isabelle M. Hirt Fritschen. He was a Hutchinson resident since 1968. He graduated from Dorrance High School. He received his bachelor's degree in elementary education and his master's degree in administration and curriculum from Fort Hays State University, and completed postgraduate courses at Kansas State University and Notre Dame University. He was a retired principal for Graber, Morgan and Winans grade schools and had served as the director of community education and the director of federal programs as well as Head Start for Hutchinson Public Schools. He also was a wood-carver.

He belonged to Church of the Holy Cross, where he was in the Chancel choir and served as a lector and eucharistic minister. He was director for the former Sky Riders Drum and Bugle Corps, a member of the Salt Minors Chorus, served on the board of directors for the Community Health Coalition, the Anti- Tobacco Coalition and the Family Children's Theatre, where he was also known for his role as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the production of "Annie." He was a founding member of the Central Kansas Polio Survivors Support Group, Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, Hutchinson Association of Retired School Personnel, and the NAACP.

On Sept. 29, 1956, he married Lila Chockley in Russell. She survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Joan Manning, Keller, Texas; two grandchildren, Chris Michaels-Allala and Jennifer Marie Kennell; and three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kaylina and Lila Belle Michaels.

Parish rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Cross. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Cross with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Dorrance. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson.
