Obituary

Robert J. Gilliland, 89, died April 14, 2007, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born March 25, 1918, in Arkansas City, the son of James Finney and Charlotte Inches Gilliland. He graduated in 1936 from Hutchinson High School, in 1938 from Hutchinson Junior College in 1940 from the University of Kansas, and in 1942 from the University of Kansas School of Law. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, he had been a practicing attorney since 1946, founding Gilliland and Hayes Law Firm in 1959 with John Hayes. He also served as the Hutchinson City Attorney from 1962 to 1967.

He was a life member of First Presbyterian Church, where he held numerous positions and was an elder; he served on the Hutchinson Hospital board as attorney and secretary from 1969 to 2000; he was the first chairman of the original Junior College Basketball Tournament and had served on the executive committee for 50 years; past president of Rotary International, Hutchinson; past president at Prairie Dunes Country Club; past vice president of the Kansas Bar Association; past president of the USD No. 308 School Board; past commander of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, Hutchinson; and belonged to Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, at the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was commissioned as an officer on Aug. 5, 1942.

On Aug. 8, 1942, he married Ruth Peters in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, James and wife, Karen, Hutchinson; a daughter, Patricia Ruth Crews and husband, Franklin "Buzz," Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Tim Soule and the Rev. Helen Moore-Spath presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Private family graveside services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or to the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
