Robert "Bob" Aloysius Gottschalk, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at Promise Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 7, 1931, to A.C. "Al" and Verona Cannon Gottschalk in Garden City, KS. In 1949, he graduated from Thomas More Prep High School, formerly St. Joe's Military Academy, in Hays. He attended Kansas State University. He graduated in 1957, from Regis College, Denver, with a degree in business.
On August 18, 1956, he married Rosemary Kennedy in El Dorado.
He served in the Korean War as Master Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1954. He lived in Colby, KS, where he was the owner of Gottschalk Implement which later became Gottschalk Motors. He moved to Hutchinson in 1974 and began working at the Kansas State Fair. He served as General Manager of the fair for 23 years, retiring in 1997. Throughout his tenure with the Kansas State Fair, Bob received numerous distinguished awards including the International Fairs and Exposition Association Hall of Fame. He was President of the IAFE in 1995. He also received the Travel Industry Association of Kansas Distinguished Service Award in 1997. He served on the boards of the Hutchinson Town Club, TECH, Friends of the Zoo, Chamber of Commerce, and was involved in many other community organizations. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the K-State Alumni Association.
Survivors include: his wife Rosemary, of the home; daughter, Maribeth Reimer and husband Jeff, Hutchinson; son, Joe Gottschalk and wife Christi, Olathe; three brothers, James C., and Thomas L., both of Denver, and Timothy W., Garden City; and seven grandchildren, Ted, Libby, Mitchell and Ben Reimer, and Colby, Cannon and Claire Gottschalk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Muriel Blachly Gottschalk, and a sister, Carol J. Wasinger.
Parish rosary will be at 9 a.m., Friday, Dec 26, 2008, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the funeral mass following at 9:30 a.m. with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Holy Cross Catholic Church, or Friends of the Kansas State Fair, both in care of the mortuary.
