PLEVNA – Robert Lee "Bob" Klein of Plevna, formerly of Hutchinson, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 20, 2014, at home surrounded by his family. Bob fought a long, valiant battle with Parkinson's disease with grace and dignity. Bob was born Jan. 8, 1934, in Pittsburg.
On July 2, 1961, he married Janice Kay Boggs at First Christian Church in Pittsburg.
He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Master's plus 60. Bob served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant for four years during the Korean conflict, where he worked on B36 Bombers as an aircraft electrician. After his discharge, he was employed by Hutchinson High School and was instrumental in starting the electricity and electronics program. Mr. Klein also taught for the Hutchinson Community College. He opted for an early retirement from teaching in 1994.
Mr. Klein was a member of Park Place Christian Church and served as a deacon. His passions were his family, fishing, hunting and watching professional football. He will always be remembered as a special, loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by: his wife, Jan; daughters, Kay Baldwin (Mitchell), Overland Park, and Janet Thornburg (Bill), Holtville, Calif.; son, Michael Klein and fiancee Crystal Servin, Annapolis, Md.; sister, Vicki Forloine (Clint), Napa, Calif.; sister-in-law, Jan Klein, Pittsburg; grandchildren, Jennifer Baldwin-O'Hara (Shaun), Eric Baldwin, Cody Thornburg, Lindsey Thornburg and April Thornburg; and his four-legged companions, Sophie, Willy, Sampson, Simon and Linux.
Mr. Klein is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Allene Klein; his in-laws, Fred and Mildred Boggs; brother, Ed Klein; infant daughter, Kathy Klein; and grandson, Carl Thornburg.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Park Place Christian Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Lynn Taylor presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the McConnell Air Force Honor Guard. A private family graveside service will be held following the funeral. The register book will be available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. The casket will be closed.
