Obituary

Robert Leroy Skellenger, 91, of Hutchinson, died June 7, 2026, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 21, 1934, in Hutchinson to Mildred May Parrish and George Skellenger of Partridge. He was raised and educated in Partridge, graduating from Partridge High School.

He worked at a variety of places in his life, but for many years, he was employed at Detroiter Mobile Homes. Eventually he moved to the City of Hutchinson, where he retired after several years in public works.

Always active, he enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and camping with family at various Kansas lakes, hunting and fishing in the mountains with his brother, metal detecting, going to yard sales, or tinkering on any number of projects. He also enjoyed animals, owning many dogs over the years, including his beloved husky, Almond Joy, who gave him true joy and exuberant companionship in his final years.

He also enjoyed visiting with friends. For years, he dined regularly with a group at Sirloin Stockade and, more recently, could often be found drinking coffee with pals at IHOP.

A more affable, kind and generous man one would be hard-pressed to find.

He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law Elizabeth and Floyd Brubaker and Barbara and Keith Hobbick; a brother, Jerry Skellenger; and a brother-in-law Richard McReynolds.

He is survived by a sister, Edith McReynolds of Castleton, a sister-in-law, Carol Skellenger of Hutchinson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Elliott Chapel. Private burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign his book at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Robert Skellenger Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. To benefit the Robert Skellenger Memorial Fund, please make the check payable to Elliott Mortuary.
