Roger Freeland, 60, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010. He was born July 27, 1950, at Topeka, the son of Glenn and Mildred Green Freeland.
He was a 1968 graduate of Geneseo High School and a 1974 graduate of Ft. Hays State University, a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam War, a retired USD #309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson teacher and was a USD #308 Hutchinson paraprofessional.
On Dec. 22, 1984, he married Valarie Engstrom in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: three sons, Daniel Engstrom, Seth Freeland, both of Hutchinson, and Andrew Freeland of Wichita; brother, Larry; father-in-law, John and his wife, Clarice Mathews Engstrom of Hutchinson; brother-in-laws Jon Engstrom and his wife Paula of Topeka and Wade Engstrom of Wichita; sister-in-law Trina Metheny of Liberty, Missouri; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 700 East 25th Avenue, with Keith Koch officiating. His casket will be closed at the church, cremation will follow.
Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with family present 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, all at Elliott Mortuary. Memorial gifts may be made to the Roger Freeland Scholarship at Nickerson High School or Hospice of Reno County.
