Ronald D. "Ron" Schrag, 74, died June 1, 2013, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, following a heart attack. He was born Sept. 10, 1938, at Newton, Kan., the son of Paul G. and Mae E. Stucky Schrag.
Ron was raised on a farm in Harvey County, near Moundridge, Kan., and was baptized at Eden Mennonite Church. He attended school at Liberty Grade School and Moundridge High School, graduating in 1956. Ron attended Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., and then graduated from Wichita Business College in 1963.
He married LaVerle Dirks on May 30, 1964, at Liberal, Kan.
After working in accounting in Canton, Kan., 1963-1964, he worked at the Co-op in Concordia, Kan., as office manager and credit union manager from 1964-1968. Then he moved to Hutchinson in 1968 and worked at Kansas Farmer's Service from 1968-1969 as a computer programmer.
Ron worked at Far-Mar-Co in Hutchinson from 1969-1982 as systems engineer, sales manager, and division manager.
In 1982, he became a business partner in Professional Data Services, a software development company, and several other computer related businesses, with Gary Mundhenke and Jim Harders. They sold the business in 1995 and he then served for six years in management positions, including Chief Operating Officer, for the new owner. He retired in June 2001.
Ron was an active member of First Mennonite Church, where he served on the trustee committee as church chairperson, and in various other leadership positions.
He served on boards for Prairie View, New Beginnings, and YMCA, volunteered at Ten Thousand Villages/Et Cetera Shop and was involved in Circles of Hope Reno County.
Ron enjoyed being involved with business interests, and he had an interest in world events, politics, and economics. He also loved swimming.
Ron is survived by: his wife, LaVerle; two daughters, Jill Addison and husband Eric, Jennifer James and husband Matt, and their children Ezra (age 7) and Elijah (age 4), all of San Diego; sister, Lois Friesen and husband Jim of Littleton, Colo.; brothers, Robert Schrag and wife Katy, and Wayne Schrag and wife Laurie, all of Moundridge; sister-in-law, Joy Imel and husband John of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cremation has taken place. A service of Remembrance and Celebration will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd., Hutchinson, Kan.
