Roy B. Roszel, 92, died Jan. 30, 2012, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1919, in rural Butler County, to George Edward and Mary Agnes Ioerger Roszel.
He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1938, was a state champion wrestler, and attended Hutchinson Jr. College. Roy was a charter member of First United Methodist Church, founded Double Circle Sunday School, and was a member of Methodist Men. He was very active in helping the food bank, blood mobile, and helped many years with the Boy Scouts. He was also a member of Buhler Rambler's Camping Club, Metal Detector Club, and a bowling team. Roy was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Intrepid Aircraft Carrier CV11 for two years.
On Oct. 26, 1946, he married Virginia Lappin at First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: children, Chris Roszel and wife Rita of Burrton, Lynn Roszel and wife Marsha of Wylie, Texas, Susan Wedel and husband Roger of Denton, Texas, Cheryl Miller and husband Glenn of Hillsboro, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Vanette Evans of Wichita, Agnes Mae Gibson of Lodi, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, 101 E. 1st, with Reverend Mark Conard officiating. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
