Obituary

Ruby N. Schmidt, 96, died Oct. 12, 2016, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Boyd, Okla., to Isaac and Emma (Neufeld) Harms.

Ruby attended Grant County Public School through 1935; in 1940 she attended one year of Junior College in Reedley, Calif. She was a member of the New Life Church of Ulysses also known as the Mennonite Brethren Church, where she was actively involved in the children's teaching and deacon ministries, and was a homemaker.

On June 9, 1950, Ruby married Daniel B. Schmidt in Ulysses, where she was involved with farming alongside her husband. He died March 5, 1984.

Survivors include: children, Melanie E. Hawthorne and husband David of Hutchinson, Garvie D. Schmidt and wife Diane of Hillsboro, KS; grandchildren, Nathan Schmidt, Heidi Schmidt, Curtis Hawthorne and wife Sarah, and Craig Hawthorne; one sister, Bernice Givan of Denver, CO. and two brothers, Johnny Harms of Mena, AK, and Clarence and wife Mary Ann of New Wilmington,PA. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David, Ike, and Alvin Harms; sisters, Edna Kliewer, Anna Mae Goertzen and Luella Schultz.

Funeral service will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Tim Sullivan and Garvie Schmidt presiding. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Golden Cemetery, Ulysses. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.
