Obituary

Ruth A. Berridge, 90, died April 29, 2008, at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Nov. 1, 1917, in rural Nickerson, the daughter of Milo and Mary Ringer Hungerford.

She was a resident of Hutchinson for 30 years. She graduated from Hutchinson High and attended Hutchinson Community Junior College. She worked six years as a cashier at Hutchinson's Fox Theatres.

She married Dennis Berridge Dec. 20, 1940. He died Sept. 9, 1991. They moved to Nickerson in 1946, where they owned and operated Berridge's IGA until their retirement. It remains a family operated business. She was an avid camper and woodcarver, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout den mother, and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Nickerson United Methodist Church, Mary Martha Circle, Chapter Q P.E.O.; Cameo Club, Mid-Century EHU, Nickerson Chips woodcarvers and was a charter member of the Nickerson Boat Club, all of Nickerson; Delos Smith woodcarvers, Hutchinson; and Holiday Ramblers.

Survivors include her four children, Penny Gitchell and husband Harlan; Brad Berridge and wife Janis; Pam Misunas and husband Jim, all of Nickerson; and Denise Ziegler, Wichita. She has 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Jackie Miller, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Alyce Faigh, a brother, Clinton Hungerford, and three sisters, Ardith Ellis, Marjorie Magyar and Helen Wenzel.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Nickerson United Methodist Church with Pastor Ron Lowry presiding. Burial will be at Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson. Visitation with family present will be Thursday evening 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Nickerson United Methodist Church. Elliott Mortuary is in charge of the services. Memorials may be sent to the Nickerson United Methodist Church. There will be calling hours at Elliott Mortuary from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday May 1, 2008.
