Ruth E. Smith, 80, died March 22, 2008, at her home, Hutchinson. She was born Dec. 27, 1927, in St. John, Ks. She was raised by her Aunt and Uncle Howard and Alma Cappell after the death of her parents. She graduated from St. John High School in 1945, and attended Business College in Wichita. She was a bookkeeper for Food for Less and a lifelong employee of Nash-Finch.

She belonged to the First Christian Church of Stafford, Women of the Moose and she enjoyed playing pitch with two different clubs.

On Oct. 29, 1947, she married William E. "Bill" Smith in Stafford. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Russell E. Smith and wife Sharon, of Haven; a daughter, Teresa Vollweider and husband Ted of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Mandy Crouse and husband Bobby of Republic, Mo., Jenny Ravenscroft and husband Brett of Overland Park, KS, Holly Spellman and husband Dusty of Hutchinson, Brian Vollweider and wife Amanda of Hutchinson; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Mary Louise and Wilma Hohner.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday March 25, 2008, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Chaplain Art Maddock presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elliott Chapel. Burial will be in Penwell- Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum.
