Sarah Elizabeth "Beth" Young, 99, of Hutchinson, died Oct. 6, 2016. She was born Nov. 17, 1916, to Joseph and Frankie (Lunsford) Hemphill, their second youngest.
Beth lived on a farm near Partridge until she was 16 when her family moved near Pretty Prairie, where she graduated from high school in 1934.
Beth moved to Hutchinson at the age of 19 to attend Salt City Business College, graduating at the top of her class. Following, she worked for Kansas Power and Light Company for five years until her marriage on Aug. 2, 1942.
Beth was a charter member of the Reno County Chorale Society, a 60-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and after raising her children, a postal service employee at Coberly Drug. She was then the proofreader for The Hutchinson News where she received numerous professional accolades. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was the constant support she gave her family. She attended far more musical concerts, swim meets, ballgames, dance programs, plays, pageants, and typed more school reports than one would have thought possible.
Beth offered her time and talents whenever a teacher, PTA, scout troop, church, neighbor, or friend had a need. Her community support could be read in the editorials of The Hutchinson News. Beth was smart, had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and sing, and was immensely caring.
Surviving are: her seven children, Mary Beth Swenson (Bill), Marsha Bunting (Bob), Dr. Robert Young (Vicki), Nancy Czerniak (Bob), David Young (Margaret), Steve Young (Jan), and Don Young (Stephanie); grandmother to 19; great-grandmother to 22; and great great-grandmother to two. She was preceded in death by: husband, Kenneth W. Young; and her six siblings, Ruby (Opdyke) Schnurr, Byron Opdyke, Howard Opdyke, Merle Hemphill, Dorothy (Hemphill) Cheatham, and Orville Hemphill.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 17th and Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Michael McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. A donation to the Reno County Chorale Society, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, would be appreciated, but she also loved flowers.
