Shirley Anne Hoyt Von Ruden of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away on August 11, 2012, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Shirley was born August 27, 1926, in Iola, Kansas, and was one of three children of Carroll and Ruth Hoyt. She graduated from Iola High School and the University of Kansas in 1949, with a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, and worked at the Illinois Research Hospital in the Dietetics Department; while in Chicago she met William Von Ruden. They were married in 1951 and lived in Chicago, Shawano, Wisconsin, and San Francisco, California, before settling in Hutchinson, Kansas, where they raised their children, Libby and Bill (Bunk).
Shirley was incredibly active in the Hutchinson community. She served as the former president of the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Board, held various offices in the city and Prairie Dunes Women's Golf Association, supported the Hutchinson Junior College Basketball and Jazz programs, and served as a volunteer at the Hutchinson Hospital for many years. She was also a member of the Corporation Board and State Membership chairperson for Gamma Phi Beta Sorority at the University of Kansas. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Shirley was employed at Harris News Service from 1979-1998.
Shirley always looked forward to her summers in northern Michigan, where she had a cottage in the Eveline Orchards Resort on beautiful Lake Charlevoix. She spent her summers enjoying family and her many northern Michigan friends at the cottage, on the golf course where she was an avid golfer, and in the family boat. Like the entire family, she was a passionate Kansas Jayhawks fan.
Survivors include: her son, Bill (Lori) Von Ruden, of Marysville, Washington; and daughter, Libby (Dave) Domann of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Also surviving is a sister, Suzie Marquis of Leawood, Kansas; and six grandchildren, Kate (Jay) Lytle, Gross Pointe, MI, Anne Domann, Kansas City, Ks, John Domann, Lawrence, Ks, Melissa (Jon) Hedgcoth, Marysville, WA, Michelle (Michael) Hansen, Bellevue, WA, and Mitchell Von Ruden, Marysville, WA.
