Stan R. Singleton, 58, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012, after complications from a heart attack on April 3.
Born on August 5, 1953, Stan grew up in the Hutchinson area, and worked on the family farm in Plevna while attending school. After graduating from Buhler High School, he went on to earn a BA and then a law degree from Washburn University. He was admitted to the Kansas Bar Association in 1978. Stan then served as a Captain for the U.S. Air Force, which saw him working as an Air Force attorney in bases across the U.S., and later Kunsan, South Korea, where he met his former wife Suncha and mother of his two children, Stacy and Stuart. In 1981, Stan settled in Derby, Kansas, where he started his own law practice. He soon became a leader in the local community, well known for his love of story-telling, and quick-witted sense of humor. He went on to become Derby Municipal Court Judge and President of the Derby Board of Education. He also spent several years as the City Attorney for Mulvane and later Park City. Stan had a bigger-than-life personality and a generous heart. He was a talented baritone player with a love of brass band and jazz and blues music, and he was a most formidable racquetball and golf player.
He is survived by: daughter, Stacy Singleton of London, UK; son Stuart Singleton, of Wichita; his parents, Calvin and Geneva Singleton, of Hutchinson; sister, Sidney Shelman, and nephew, Colin Shelman, of Rose Hill; and a brother, Scott Singleton, of Topeka.
