Stephen "Steve" Chalfant, 81, passed away December 18, 2020, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born January 24, 1939, to Claude and Junia (Young) Chalfant, in Hutchinson.
Steve graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956, attended Hutchinson Community College, the University of Kansas, and graduated from Pittsburg State University. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Steve married Julia Rayl, in Hutchinson, on September 5, 1959.
After working a few years in banking in Colorado Springs, Colorado, they returned to Hutchinson, where he was in real estate, and subsequently worked as the purchasing agent at Krause Corporation until retiring.
Steve was an avid golfer and played several rounds with Jack Nicklaus in the 1958 Trans-Miss Amateur, when Nicklaus won the championship and Steve was runner up in the Presidents Flight. Perhaps his proudest round was shooting par on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1982, accompanied by his three sons. Over the years, Steve served as Mayor of Willowbrook, President of Prairie Dunes Country Club, and President of Kansas Golf Association.
Steve is survived by: his wife, Julie of 61 years; son, Brad and wife, Dr. Brenda Johnson of Bend, Oregon, Jeff and wife, Lorie of Kyle, Texas, and Tom and wife, Judy Deck of Round Rock, Texas; grandchildren, Jac and Joe Chalfant of Kyle, Texas, Maddie Chalfant of Greenville, SC, and Adara Deck Chalfant, Round Rock, Texas; sisters-in law, Martha Chalfant, Littleton, Colorado, Virginia Schackleford, Kansas City, Kansas, and Virginia Rayl; and brother-in-law, Dick Hamilton, both of Hutchinson.
Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will hold a memorial service and interment of ashes at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or the Hutchinson Art Association, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
