Obituary

Mary Sue (Shann) Algrim passed away on May 15, 2026, at Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson. Sue was born on December 23, 1942, in Pauls Valley, OK, to Clarence Edd and Daisy Mae (Richardson) Shann. On August 7, 1965, she married Eugene “Gene” Ernest Algrim at the United Methodist Church in Dodge City, KS.

After graduating from Central State College in Edmond, OK, in 1964, Sue accepted her first teaching position in Montezuma, KS, where she met her beloved husband. Following teaching posts in Junction City and Holyrood, the family settled in La Crosse in 1976; it was there that they would raise their three children. Sue later ran a preschool from her home and served as a dedicated Avon representative for many years. She also enjoyed a long career in retail before her retirement.

In 2004, Sue and Gene relocated to Hutchinson to be near family. An avid reader and a devoted OU fan, Sue also loved being outdoors, sewing, and planting flowers. She took immense pride in her home, decorating it for every season to ensure it was a welcoming oasis for her family. During retirement, she and Gene traveled throughout the U.S., including a memorable trip to Alaska, as well as abroad to Scotland. However, her favorite trips were those to Southeast Oklahoma and the many miles traveled to cheer on her grandchildren. A faithful member of Park Place Christian Church, Sue’s legacy of love and devotion will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Daisy Shann, and her four sisters: Neva Parker, Shirley Hoelscher, Frances Zimmerman, and her twin sister, Betty Lou Shann.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Algrim, of the home; her children, Eric Algrim (Lisa) of Fort Madison, IA, Gwen Rundle (Chris) of Hutchinson, and Kirk Algrim (Ashley) of Oologah, OK; eight grandchildren, Bryce Algrim (Kortney), Blake Algrim, Ellie Baxter, Courtney Rundle, Kylie Rundle, Taylor Strahorn (John), Madyson Most, and Zoey Algrim; three step-grandchildren, Kali Kern (Kody), Marisa Andrews (Austin), and Ryley Basham (Mady); six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. A private family ceremony for the inurnment will follow at Mitchell Cemetery in Hutchinson, KS.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Park Place Christian Church or Mennonite Friendship Communities, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
