Obituary

Thelma M. Bauman, 96, died Oct. 22, 2011, at Hester Care Center. She was born Nov. 8, 1914, at rural Turon, the daughter of A. Earl and Julia Mertz Shanline. Her family moved to rural Kendallville, Ind., when she was a little girl and she attended school and graduated as valedictorian of her class at Kendallville High School.

She raised her family and started nursing school in Indiana, and received her nursing degree from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Hutchinson. She worked as a registered nurse for many years with Drs. Scales, Stone and Moorman, and later at the Hutchinson Clinic at 1125 Main. Thelma was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and was active in Circle 5 at the church.

She married Boyce A. Bauman on March 11, 1954, in Hutchinson. He died Nov. 15, 2000.

Survivors include: a son, David L. McDanel and his wife Ann of Hutchinson; a brother, Kenneth Shanline of Turon; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at Elliott Mortuary, with Pastor Tim Carey presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m., all at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
