HUTCHINSON - Theodore A. "Ted" Wiebe, 84, died Feb. 23, 2010, at his home in Hutchinson.
He was born June 18, 1925, in Halstead to Herman P. and Eva K. Smiley Wiebe.
He attended Harvey County rural schools and graduated from Halstead High School in 1943. Ted graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg in 1949, with a Bachelors Degree, and in 1955, with a Master of Science Degree. He taught five years at Beloit High School, moving to Hutchinson in 1957, where he taught English for three years at the former Plaza Junior High School. He then moved to Hutchinson Community College, where he taught English and Journalism for thirty years until his retirement in 1990.
Ted was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #612, and Hutchinson Harvest House. He was a lifelong member of NEA, and Pittsburg State Alumni Association. He also belonged to both the State and Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Associations, Hutchinson Horticulture Club, and Central Kansas Model Railroaders Club. He formerly belonged to Ark Valley Sams Camping Club, and State Fair Promenaders Square Dancing Club. He was a volunteer with RSVP and delivered Meals on Wheels for the past 19 years.
On Dec. 27, 1952, he married Patricia A. "Pat" Schibi at St. Mary's Church in Parsons. She survives.
Other survivors include: son Michael A. Wiebe and wife Nancy, Blue Springs, Mo.; four daughters, Cynthia A. Dawson and husband Ken, Valrico, Fla., Rebecca L. Wiebe, Henderson, Nev., Carolyn J. Davis, Omaha, Neb., and Jennifer E. Light and husband Greg, Wichita; sister Beth Cronhardt, Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: daughter Marcia C. Wiebe in 1978; and four brothers Warren, Wally, Paul, and Pete.
Mass will be 1 p.m. Sat., Feb. 27, 2010, at St. Teresa's Catholic Church with Father Nicholas Voelker presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum. Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Fri., Feb. 26, 2010 at Elliott Chapel.
Memorials may be made to St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hospice of Reno County, or Immaculate Conception Cathedral Renovation in Wichita, in care of the mortuary.
