Obituary

Trunkalino Velasquez 'Trunkie' Vieyra, 86, died Saturday, June 1, 2019, at his home. He was born July 6, 1932, in Hutchinson, to Luis C. and Bibiana (Velasquez) Vieyra.

Trunkie attended Hutchinson High School and graduated from Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Army for 21 years, retiring as Sergeant First Class in 1972. During both the Korean and Vietnam Conflict, Trunkie was a member of the 101st Airborne.  Trunkie then worked at Dillons Warehouse. He was a member of V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, Knights of Columbus #612 (Third Degree), and Teamsters Local #795. Trunkie was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, South Hutchinson, and lifetime member of 'Holy Name' at the church. He was a Golden Gloves boxing champion and boxed on the team while serving in the Army. In addition, Trunkie was the co-founder of Los Paracaidistas (a parachute organization).

On June 7, 1958, he married Erlinda Flores in Hutchinson.

Trunkie is survived by: his wife of almost 61 years, Erlinda; children, David Vieyra and wife Irene of Salina, Michael Vieyra and wife Kathy, Edward Vieyra and companion Marla Booher, Raylene Selgrade and husband Mike, Lawrence Vieyra and wife Michelle, Barbara Vieyra, all of Hutchinson, Carolyn Vieyra and companion, John Dye of Wichita; brother, Daniel Vieyra and wife Sara of Hutchinson; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; daughter, Felecia 'Lisa' Vieyra; sister, Nellie Garcia; and brothers, Jesus, Bacilio, Jesus (Chickie), Pete, Frank, Rojelio, and Charlie.

Parish Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, with Father Todd Shepherd officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2019, at the church with Father Ned J. Blick officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Reno County Veterans' Memorial, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
