Veora Mabel Abernathy, 99, died February 24, 2016, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born January 30, 1917, in Hutchinson to Charles and Isabelle (Cole) Pierson. She was a homemaker, member of South Hutchinson Christian Church and was the oldest and longest volunteer for the Reno County Health Department, volunteering for more than 30 years.Veora was a lifetime resident of Hutchinson, living on Cole Street her entire life. On April 20, 1942, she married Lewis Boyd Abernathy in Hutchinson, moved next door and remained on Cole Street, which was named after her grandfather.
Survivors include: children, David Abernathy and wife Martha of Plevna, Judy Kinast of Hutchinson, Sharon Price and husband Ralph of Sterling, Ill., Marsha Schmutz and husband Larry of Nixa, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 43 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Gibbo Pierson and wife Georgie of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Brian Cooper; stepchildren, Donald Abernathy and Joyce Hargrove; son-in-law, Roy Kinast; siblings, Elmo, Clyde and John Paul Cole, Vera Fireball and Roseamond Dunsworth.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016, at South Hutchinson Christian Church, with Pastor Jeff Arnold presiding. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family to receive friends 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
