Vergil V. Spangler, 86, died Sept. 4, 2011, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
He was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Lake Worth, Fla., to Vergil V. and Edna Powers Spangler.
Verg was the retired co-owner operator of the former Verg and John's Conoco Service Station, which was located at Fourth and Poplar. He was a member of the First Christian Church, was a longtime volunteer at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, and a member of the Hutch Bunch RC Flying Club. A veteran of World War II, Verg served in the U.S. Navy.
He married Wilma Johnston on Sept. 2, 1944, in Hutchinson. She died March 25, 2007.
Survivors include: daughter, Janis Gross and husband Jerry of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Vickie Hoskins and husband George of Toledo, Ohio, and Julie Tarm and husband Viktor of Wichita, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Shelby and Elijah Hoskins, and Marley and Kal Tarm; niece, Debbie Bogart; and two grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Kathryn Myers; and a brother, Frank Spangler.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at First Christian Church, Fifth and Walnut, Hutchinson, with Reverend Jim Bell and Chaplain Bob Phipps officiating. Burial in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or Hospice of Reno County, in care of the mortuary.
