Verna M. Smith, 93, of South Hutchinson, died May 12, 2026, at Mennonite Friendship Communities. She was born July 20, 1932, in Russell, Kansas, to Noah and Fila (Brown) Loftis.
On May 21, 1949, Verna married Paul E. Smith in Russell. They shared nearly 49 years of marriage before his death on April 23, 1998.
Verna was family centered and loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She attended every ball game possible and enjoyed family dinners. Verna showed kindness and strength on a daily basis and stood strong in her faith and humanity.
Verna enjoyed camping, puzzles, and genealogy. She had a special interest in western films, professional bull riding, and Conway Twitty. Verna had a wide variety of hobbies and even like to play Mario Brothers on Nintendo.
Verna is survived by: grandchildren, Chris Ward (Staci Hoffman) of Hutchinson, Megan (Jacob) White of South Hutchinson, Troy (Jill) Smith of Andover, Tandi Smith of Wichita, Scott (Courtney) Smith of Kingman, Jamie Smith of Hutchinson, and Bucklin “Buck” Smith of Attica; sons-in-law, Bret (Rhonda) Ward of Buhler and Richard (Judy) Parsons of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Anita Smith; 14 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her: parents; beloved husband; adored children, Bobby Smith, Dennis Smith, Howard Smith, and Carlene Ward; granddaughter, Jennifer Ward; sisters, Mabel Smith and Virginia Casey.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2026, at Crossroads Christian Church, 4310 N. Monroe, with Pastor Kevin Guffey officiating. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery. Friends may sign her book Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Crossroads Christian Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main Hutchinson, KS 67501.
