Vivian Marie Munger, 96, died Oct. 27, 2008, at the Hospice House of Reno County.
She was born Vivian Marie Bloomfield May 6, 1912, in Winfield, Kansas the daughter of Merl and Lottie Marie Bloomfield.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economy from Kansas State University. She was a high school teacher and homemaker. She and her future husband both wanted to leave Kansas after their graduation due to their experiences with the "dustbowl" in the mid '30s. After graduation she taught in Illinois and at Matfield Green in Kansas. She set up housekeeping with Elmer Munger after their marriage on December 28, 1939 in an old log cabin in Cincinnati, Ohio.
They moved to Omaha where their son John Thomas (White River Junction, Vt.) was born.
They then went to the Philippines where Elmer worked as an engineer missionary with the Episcopal Church and son Harold H. (Hal), II (Hutchinson, Kan.) was born. After returning from the Philippines in 1948 they moved to Ames, Iowa where Elmer worked on his Ph.D. and daughter Jane Marie Henkin (Bethesda, MY) was born. She drove the Al-Can highway to Fairbanks Alaska with three small children and a college student to share the driving in 1952. She returned to Ames in '54, and moved to Northfield, Vt. in '58 where she again taught in the high school until her oldest son entered high school, at which time she retired. They again relocated in 1969 to Mayaguez P.R. until '75 when they moved to Houghton Michigan. Upon Elmer's retirement in 1980 they moved to Port Charlotte Florida after a three-year stopover in Manhattan, Kan., to pick up her father-in-law. In 2001, she and Elmer moved to Hutchinson, Kan., where Elmer passed away May 24, 2006.
She is survived by: her three children; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, with the Rev. Tom Miles presiding.
