Vivian Anne Lane Phelps, 98, died Dec. 12, 2016, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born June 11, 1918, in Wichita, the daughter of William and Helen (Steiver) Schroeder.
Vivian graduated from Wellington High School and Wichita Business College. She had been a Hutchinson resident since 1958. Vivian was a retired oil and legal secretary, having worked for Standard Oil for 21 years and several law firms in Hutchinson. She also worked as an administrative assistant for the Kansas Ready-Mixed Concrete Association for many years.
Vivian was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church and its Altar Society. An enthusiastic, generous, and energetic volunteer, she served with many organizations including the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Sky Ryders, Friends of the Library, and RSVP until ill health at age 94 limited her abilities. Vivian loved learning new skills and eagerly acquired computer and word processing skills when she volunteered for the city of Hutchinson in her mid-eighties. She enjoyed taking craft classes at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center.
Vivian married Robert W. Lane in 1949. He died in 1950. She married Willard E. Phelps in 1958. He died in 1974. Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David McQuilliam, Hutchinson, Deborah Lane and Howard Welch, Shawnee, Julie and Richard Gusman, Dodge City; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Marianne Phelps, Woodstock, Ga.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by son, David Lane.
Vigil and rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th Ave., Hutchinson, with Fathers Michael Maybrier and Nicholas Voelker officiating. Committal service will follow in the Old Mission Mausoleum Chapel, 3424 E 21st St., Wichita. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
