Obituary

"Wally" Wallace Smith, 86, died Sept. 1, 2012, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born June 9, 1926, in Hutchinson, the son of Reed Q. and Ida Maye Coberly Smith.

He attended Ave A, Sherman Jr. High and Hutchinson Sr. High schools. On Aug. 24, 1944, he entered Army basic training camp at Fannin, Texas. He went overseas in Jan. of 1945 and was wounded in action in Warzburg, Germany on April 4, 1945. He was medically discharged on Nov. 7, 1945. Wally retired as a postal clerk in the Hutchinson Post Office after 33 years of service. He was a member of the American Postal Workers Union and he served for 35 years as a volunteer board member of the Postal Credit Union. Wally was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, V.F.W., and the Disabled American Veterans.

On June 6, 1948, he married Lois Mae Allison in Hutchinson. She survives. Other survivors include: two daughters, Debra Kay Crawford and husband Bill of Indianapolis, Ind., Cindy Joleen Kidd and husband Doug of Hutchinson; two brothers, Ronald Smith of Hutchinson, Roy Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Sherry Brooks of Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Sarah Crawford of Minneapolis, Minn. and Joseph Wallace Crawford of the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carol W. Smith.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Reverend Joseph S. Rychcik presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson.
