Walter Roland

Walter Roland McIver, died March 4, 2019, of cancer at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born November 15, 1943, in Hutchinson, to Roland and Dorothy (Fesler) McIver. Walter spent all but nine years of his life farming near Abbyville. He graduated from Arlington High School and earned a degree in psychology from Fort Hays State University before enlisting in the United States Army. His nine years serving in the armed forces would take him to various posts around the country and on a deployment to Vietnam in 1969-70. By the end of his military service, Walter had earned the rank of captain, as well as a master's degree in adult education from Georgia Southern University.
On July 18, 1964, Walter married Lynne Hinshaw at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. When he and Lynne returned to Kansas, he both farmed and had a long and distinguished career at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, where he retired as a deputy warden. In his retirement, Walter continued farming, and he also served as a church trustee and as a member of the Reno County Commission appointed to make recommendations toward a new county jail in Hutchinson.
He was a beloved son, brother, father, husband, and friend.
Walter is survived by: wife, Lynne of the home; son, Andrew, Abbyville; daughter, Rachel McIver Morey (Jerad), Northfield, MN; sister, Judy Spore, Abbyville; and four grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 101 E. 1st Ave., Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
