Obituary

Wendell Claire Fjelstad, 84, died Feb. 14, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born June 22, 1922, in Stanley, N.D., the son of Peder Paul and Aleitha Blanche Martin Fjelstad. A resident of Hutchinson since 1988, moving from Arkansas City and Topeka, he was a salesman for Kansas Gas Service Company, working in Topeka, Hiawatha and Arkansas City, retiring in 1984.

He belonged to the First Christian Church, Hiawatha Masonic Lodge No. 35, Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 AF&AM, Kansas Outstanding Mason in 2004, Midian Shrine of Wichita, and the Legion of Honor, Reno County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Valley of Wichita Orient of Kansas, he was a Knight Commander Court of Honour for the 32 Degree, Reno/Rice County Scottish Rite Club, York Rite, Reno Commandery, Knight Templar No. 26, Reno Chapter No. 34 Royal Arch Masons of Kansas, Hutchinson Masonic High Twelve Club No. 571, and the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On April 16, 1944, he married Phyllis Margaret Walker in Topeka. She died Aug. 18, 2003.

Survivors include: three daughters, Marti Thompson, McPherson, Margalis Fjelstad, Monument, Colo., and Jane F. Clark, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; two half-brothers, Don Waller, Longmont, Colo., and Dale Waller; two sisters, Lynn Hatch, Sacramento, Calif., and Lorna Kramer, Walnut Grove, Calif.; six grandchildren, Devan Salerno, Douglas Thompson, Denise Owens, Diana Thompson, Kristina Sickels, and Julie Sickels; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Salerno and Macy Thompson.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Ralph and Faye Fjelstad; and an infant sister, Clarissa Fjelstad.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, with the Rev. John Warring presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Soldier Cemetery, Soldier, with Masonic services conducted by the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 AF&AM, and military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials may be set to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, in care of the funeral home.
