William Adkins, 79, died June 10, 2013, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 11, 1933, in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Milard Oscar "Buck" and Mary Edith (Smith) Adkins.
William served as Private First Class in the United States Army from 1957-1962.
He taught Marriage and Family, history, and coached football and track and field while in the military in Germany, then at College High at Pittsburg, Elk City, Goodland, Hutchinson Community College and Buhler High School.
On Feb. 14, 1959, he married Greta Meyer in Independence, Kan. She died Sept. 17, 2009. Survivors include: son, William H. Adkins and wife Courtney of Buhler; two daughters, Wendy Pankratz of Hutchinson and Gretchen Jabben of Olathe, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Jack, Abbie, John, Natalie, Jess, Blythe and Sloane. William was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Greta Adkins; four brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at the Stringer Fine Arts Center with Chaplain Bob Phipps officiating. Military honors will be provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kan. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
