William Micheal “Bill” Steierl, 66, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026, surrounded by his children at Newton Medical Center.
He was born on August 2, 1960, in Sterling, Kansas, to Clifford V. “Bud” and Vera Jane (Cruth) Steierl.
Bill graduated from Buhler High School in 1978. Shortly after graduation, he began working at Sonoco, where he dedicated more than 31 years of his life.
Bill was a man of many things—a son, father, Papa, mechanic, bull rider, and motorcycle enthusiast. He wore many hats throughout his life, but the role he cherished most was being there for his family. A true jack of all trades, there was very little Bill couldn’t fix, build, or figure out.
He enjoyed mud runs with his children and grandchildren, working on anything with a motor, riding his Harley-Davidson and anything that kept him surrounded by the people he loved. He was involved in CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association) and was a member of First Southern Baptist Church.
Bill will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his ability to fix just about anything, his love of motors and racing, and most of all, the love and memories he shared with his family and friends. He lived life on his own terms, never afraid to get his hands dirty, take on a challenge, or make a memory.
Bill is survived by: his children, Nikki (Bryant) Johnson of Newton, Kacey (Ryne) Clark of Broomfield, CO, Matthew (Kaitlyn) Steierl of Buhler, Kyle Steierl of Wichita, Phillip Guthrie of Hutchinson, Shawn Howerton of McPherson; grandchildren, Avery, Kenzie and Jase Schmidt, Jarrin Barber, Ryder Johnson, Jonah and Scotty Clark, Kaliya, Kamdyn, Maddox and Lenyx Steierl, Ellie, Walker and Claire Guthrie, Donna Howerton; and sister, Jane (David) Cruse of Great Bend.
He was preceded in death by: his parents and sister, Jean Garner.
In Loving Memory of William “Wild Bill” Steierl.
Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, at First Southern Baptist Church, 1201 E. 23rd, Hutchinson, with Pastor Roy Jaye officiating. The family asks that you wear Harley-Davidson, orange, or black attire in true Bill fashion, honoring him in a way that reflects his love of motorcycles and his signature style. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the William M. “Bill” Steierl Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. To benefit the William M. “Bill” Steierl Memorial Fund, please make the check payable to Elliott Mortuary.
