Obituary

William D. "Bill" Bornholdt, 84, died Nov. 18, 2009, at his home, Hutchinson. He was born May 17, 1925, in Hutchinson, the son of Eugene Dwight and Fern Lentz Bornholdt.

He was a 1943 graduate of Buhler High School, Buhler, attended Hutchinson Junior College, received his Bachelor of Arts in 1956 and his Masters in Education in 1962, both from Wichita State University. A resident of Hutchinson, he was a longtime USD #308 teacher and administrator, retiring in 1985.

He belonged to First Presbyterian Church, served on the Hutchinson School Board, served on the board of the Training Occupation Center (now TECH), served on the Hutchinson City Commission, was Mayor from 1978-79, a member of the V.F.W., Lysle Rishel American Legion Post, Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Association, life member of the National Education Association, Retired Military Officers Association, was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124, and Kansas Area Retired School Personnel Association. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served 21 years in the Kansas National Guard, retiring as Major in 1985.

On Jan. 23, 1945, he married Melva Rampenthal in Newton. She survives.

Survivors include: a brother, Mike and wife Audrey, Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by sons, Dr. Bret and Eric Bornholdt; daughter, Adele; brothers, James Lawrence and Dannie Joe Bornholdt; and his parents.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Tim Soule presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the mortuary. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with Masonic rites conducted by the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 and military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Bret Bornholdt, DVM Memorial Scholarship at Kansas State University, in care of the mortuary.
