William Eugene "Bill" Smith, 87, died Nov. 15, 2014, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Kinsley, to Fred and Francis (Barnes) Smith.
He owned and operated Smith Construction, building and remodeling homes. After retirement he started Smith Cedar Works and he, along with his partner and dear friend, Don Jackson, built cedar furniture that was sold all over Kansas. Bill was a member of Crossroads Christian Church, former member of the Moose Lodge, and was in a pitch club for 35 years. He spent his life around horses and was so supportive of any of his kids or grandkids that wanted to ride or rodeo.
He married Ruth E. Hohner on Oct. 29, 1947, in Stafford. She died March 22, 2008. Bill met Norma Ludlow at one of his pitch games and they married on Sept. 10, 2009, in Hutchinson. Survivors include: his wife, Norma; son, Russell Smith (Sharon) of Ozark, Mo.; daughter, Teresa Vollweider (Ted) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Mandy McCanless (Chris) of Ozark, Mo., Jennifer Ravenscroft of Olathe, Holly Spellman (Dustin), and Brian Vollweider (Amanda), both of Hutchinson; 11 great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Agnes Coslett (Robert) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Norma's grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Ruth; brothers, Wayne Smith, Leo Smith, Keith Smith; and a sister, Joan Young.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Wayne Pittman presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
