William L. "Bill" Mitchell, 81, died March 18, 2006, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born Aug. 13, 1924, in Hutchinson, the son of Homer and Addie Painter Mitchell. He graduated in 1942, from Hutchinson High School, attended Hu-tchinson Co-mmunity College and graduated from the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan School of Law. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, he practiced law in Hutchinson and served as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 1957 to 1962. He was Speaker of the Kansas House from 1960 to 1962, and from 1963 to 1968, he chaired the Kansas Corporation Commission.
He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
On Dec. 14, 1956, he married Norma Gaulding in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Derenda Mitchell Valerius, Topeka, and Mollie Mitchell, Olathe; and four grandchildren, Margaret, Madeline, and Lawrence Meier, and William Mitchell Valerius.
Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
