William Y. "Bill" Chalfant, 82, of Hutchinson, died Jan. 7, 2011, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Hutchinson, Kan., to Claude Edward and Junia Maurine Young Chalfant.

He was a lifetime Hutchinson resident. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1946, the University of Kansas in 1950, and the University of Michigan Law School in 1956. He was an attorney with Branine, Chalfant and Hill. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association and Kansas Board of Law Examiners. He was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.

On June 30, 1956, he married Martha Anne Wallbillich in Bloomfield, Mich. She survives. Other survivors include: son, William David Chalfant and his wife Louise of St. Louis Park, Minn.; daughter, Kristin Chalfant and her husband Steve Davis of Littleton, Colo.; brother, Steve Chalfant and his wife Julie of Hutchinson; grandsons, Andrew of San Francisco and William A. of Minneapolis, Minn. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike.

Memorial service 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Grace Episcopal Church, Hyde Park and Main Street, with the Rev. Michael P. Milliken officiating. Friends may sign the book Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Family will receive friends following the service at the church.
