Wilma Dolores Scott's Obituary
Wilma Dolores Scott, known to her family and friends as Dolores, passed away at the age of 93, on Feb. 1, 2016. She was born, Wilma Dolores Jolliff on June 24, 1922, in West Plains, Mo., to Marie Gladys Perkins-Jolliff and Rufus 'Jim' Henry Jolliff.
Dolores was raised in Peru, Kan., and later moved to Coffeyville, Kan., where she graduated from high school in 1941. She followed her high school sweetheart, Chester Duane Scott, to California and they were married in Hollywood on June 8th in 1941.
When her husband joined the Navy, Dolores went to work at Hughes Aircraft. Initially hired as a riveter, she quickly moved to the main office to work as a secretary. After the war ended, she transitioned into the role of office manager, while Chester went to work for Pacific Telephone.
While attending a prayer meeting in 1951, they felt called to serve as missionaries. Two years later, in 1953, they found themselves in the Belgian Congo, where together they built schools, hospitals, churches and homes for the next 33 years, until they retired to Fairfield Bay, Ark. in 1987. She is survived by: children, Sharon D. Scott-Wheaton and husband Jerry Wheaton, John W. Scott and wife Susan E. Pankratz-Scott; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chester Scott; her parents, Jim and Marie Jolliff; brothers, Jim and Pat; and her sister, Nadine.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Elliott Chapel, 1219 N. Main, with the Rev. Ron Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to Interfaith Housing Services, the American Baptist Churches USA Board of International Ministries or Gideons International, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, KS. 67501.
